The BRAIN Center Research
Beginning in February 2021, The BRAIN Center at the University of Memphis has partnered with Le Bonheur Children’s hospital to create a new Trauma Mental Health Counseling Division to provide critical integrated mental and behavioral health counseling services to Trauma patients and their family members treated in the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital Trauma Services Division. These services are provided both inpatient, at-bedside and, also, at the outpatient Trauma Services Clinic. All of these services are unlimited and free of charge from generous funding from the Urban Child Institute. We provide trauma and neuroscience-informed counseling interventions that are individually tailored to address the unique presenting symptoms of each of our patients and families. Examples of counseling interventions include: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy, Grief Therapy, Coping Skills, Psychoeducation, Stress Management, Family Therapy, Brief Solution-Focused Therapy, Play Therapy and Parenting Strategies. In our first year alone, we provided over 1,700 Counseling Sessions for over 800 children and their family members, of whom over 70% are TennCare patients. Our services are provided by advanced-standing graduate student interns from the University of Memphis who have completed extensive training and certification in integrated behavioral health as well as trauma- and neuroscience-informed interventions with The BRAIN Center prior to their field placement at Le Bonheur.
